New Delhi, January 7 – Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus causing mild cold-like symptoms, has surged in China, overwhelming hospitals and raising outbreak concerns. In India, six cases, including two infants in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, have been confirmed. The Union Health Ministry stated these cases are isolated and unrelated to China’s situation.
Experts assert that HMPV, though capable of severe illness in vulnerable groups, is not a new virus and does not pose a global threat like COVID-19. They advise maintaining good hygiene and regular monitoring while assuring the public that the situation remains under control without needing travel restrictions.
With no vaccine or specific treatment, HMPV care focuses on symptom relief. Preventive measures include hand hygiene, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and safeguarding respiratory health. Health authorities urge vigilance, as the World Health Organization has yet to comment.
