Delhi Shivers: Record December Rainfall Brings Cold Wave and Chaos

New Delhi, December 28, 2024: The national capital experienced its coldest and wettest December in over 15 years, with unprecedented rainfall bringing the city to a standstill. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded 87 mm of rain over the past 24 hours, surpassing previous December records. The unseasonal downpour has been attributed to a strong western disturbance, which also caused waterlogging in several parts of the city.

The heavy rainfall led to a sharp drop in temperatures, with the mercury plunging to 5.3°C, significantly below the season’s average. This sudden chill has intensified the winter season in the region, prompting the IMD to issue warnings for cold-wave conditions in the coming days. Residents faced disruptions due to waterlogged roads, delayed flights, and train services.

Authorities have urged citizens to take necessary precautions against the cold and remain vigilant for weather updates. Meanwhile, experts have highlighted the need for better urban infrastructure to handle such unseasonal weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change.
