    Tamil Nadu CM Appeals for Diplomatic Action to Free Fishermen Detained by Sri Lanka

    Chennai, December 24, 2024: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has urged Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to take immediate diplomatic action for the release of 17 Tamil Nadu fishermen who were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy. The fishermen were reportedly detained while fishing in the Palk Bay, a traditional fishing area for Indian fishermen.

    In his letter to Jaishankar, CM Stalin expressed concern over the recurring incidents of Tamil Nadu fishermen being detained by Sri Lankan authorities, calling for urgent intervention to ensure their safe release. He emphasized the need for sustained diplomatic efforts to address the long-standing issue of Indian fishermen being arrested for allegedly crossing into Sri Lankan waters.

    The Chief Minister also sought assurances from the External Affairs Minister regarding the safety and well-being of the fishermen, urging their immediate repatriation. The fishermen’s families have expressed distress over the situation, demanding swift action from both the Indian and Sri Lankan governments to resolve the matter.
