Yunus to Sharif: Acknowledge 1971 History and Foster Bilateral Goodwill

Dhaka, December 21, 2024: In a significant diplomatic exchange, Nobel Laureate and prominent Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus urged Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address the unresolved issues stemming from the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. During their meeting in Dhaka, Yunus emphasized the need for Pakistan to acknowledge its historical responsibilities and work towards reconciliation with Bangladesh.

Yunus highlighted key matters, including the repatriation of stranded Pakistanis, a formal apology for wartime atrocities, and the settlement of financial liabilities from the conflict. He stressed that resolving these lingering issues would not only foster goodwill between the two nations but also pave the way for stronger bilateral relations in trade, culture, and development.

Prime Minister Sharif, while acknowledging the importance of addressing historical grievances, expressed Pakistan’s commitment to improving ties with Bangladesh. He assured Yunus that his government would consider measures to address the concerns raised, signaling a possible shift in Pakistan’s approach to the decades-old impasse. The meeting has been hailed as a step forward in bridging the gap between the two South Asian neighbors.
