Google Launches Android XR for Immersive Virtual and Augmented Reality Experiences

San Francisco, December 13, 2024: Google has unveiled Android XR, a new operating system designed specifically for smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets. In partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm, Android XR is set to offer an immersive experience that merges virtual and augmented reality. While it is not yet available for consumers, developers now have access to essential tools, such as ARCore, Android Studio, and Unity, to start creating applications for the platform.

The Android XR OS is tailored to deliver enhanced user experiences, allowing interaction with popular services like YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Photos in 3D on virtual screens. The OS supports multitasking with multiple virtual screens and intuitive gesture controls, making it ideal for immersive computing environments. The development kit has already been released for early-stage app development.

Devices running Android XR are expected to hit the market in 2025, with Samsung’s Project Moohan headset poised to be one of the first to feature the operating system. This marks a significant step toward the future of wearable technology, opening up new possibilities for both consumers and developers in the realm of mixed-reality devices.
