Vaishnaw Highlights India’s Efforts to Foster AI Development and Address Fake Narratives

New Delhi, December 11, 2024: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the Lok Sabha, affirming that the Modi government is focused on “democratizing technology” to make it accessible to all. He contrasted this approach with that of the previous Congress-led government. In response to a query on artificial intelligence (AI), Vaishnaw stated that while the government is open to regulating AI, any laws would require broad societal consensus. He also highlighted the growing issue of fake narratives and suggested that changes in legal frameworks may be needed to balance freedom of speech and accountability in media.

Vaishnaw also pointed to the government’s efforts to foster AI development in India, including the creation of AI data labs in smaller cities. These initiatives aim to bring AI research and development beyond the major tech hubs. Additionally, more than 860,000 candidates have enrolled in the Future Skills platform, which prepares India’s workforce for emerging technologies.

In closing, Vaishnaw’s speech underscored the government’s commitment to using technology as a tool for inclusive growth. By making advancements like AI accessible to all, the government hopes to build a more inclusive digital ecosystem.
