Union Minister Jitendra Singh Unveils India’s Plans for Space Station and Lunar Mission by 2040

New Delhi, December 11, 2024: India is setting its sights on ambitious space milestones, including the establishment of the Bharat Antariksha Station (BAS) by 2035 and the first manned lunar mission by 2040, according to Union Minister Jitendra Singh. The Bharat Antariksha Station, envisioned as India’s own space station, is expected to launch its first module by 2028, with the operational phase to begin in 2035. This initiative is a major step in India’s growing space capabilities, aiming to accommodate astronauts and conduct advanced research in space. The space station will be designed with a five-module configuration and docking systems compatible with the International Space Station (ISS).

In addition to the space station, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working on its Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send India’s first human into space, scheduled for 2025. As part of preparations for human spaceflight, India also plans to send a female robot, Vayumitra, into space in 2025. These projects reflect India’s commitment to strengthening its position in the global space sector and promoting innovation through collaboration with private entities in the space economy.

India’s space ambitions underscore its determination to advance its technological expertise and global standing. The development of BAS and the Gaganyaan mission align with India’s broader goal to contribute significantly to international space exploration efforts, fostering a new era of collaboration and scientific discovery in the field of space.
