Srinagar, December 10, 2024: Srinagar has recorded the coldest night of the season so far, with temperatures plunging to -5.4°C, according to weather officials. This drop in temperature is attributed to the ongoing cold wave sweeping through the Kashmir Valley, a phenomenon that has led to freezing conditions in many parts of the region. The city’s temperature is well below the usual seasonal norms, creating a bone-chilling environment.
The cold wave is part of the region’s harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan, which typically results in sub-zero temperatures and the freezing of water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake. Water pipes in many areas have also frozen due to the severe cold. The cold is expected to continue as the region moves deeper into its winter phase, with the possibility of snowfall intensifying the chilling conditions.
As the Chillai Kalan period progresses, areas across Kashmir, particularly in the higher reaches, are likely to experience heavier snowfall, further exacerbating the cold wave. Local authorities have been closely monitoring the situation, especially in areas where people live in houseboats, which are facing difficulties due to the frozen lake.
