India Emphasizes Syria’s Sovereignty, Cautions Citizens Amid Intensifying Crisis

New Delhi, December 9, 2024 — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement addressing the ongoing crisis in Syria. The Indian government expressed its concern over the escalating situation and emphasized the importance of preserving Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The MEA called for a peaceful, inclusive political process led by Syrians themselves, with respect for all segments of Syrian society.

Additionally, the Ministry highlighted that India’s Embassy in Damascus is in contact with the Indian community there to ensure their safety. The conflict in Syria, which had been dormant in recent years, has recently intensified, with rebel forces gaining control of major cities, including Aleppo, Homs, and Daraa. Following the rebels’ entry into Damascus, President Bashar al-Assad fled the country, and Russia granted asylum to him and his family.

In response to the situation, India issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid travel to Syria. Those already in Syria were advised to contact the Indian Embassy for assistance and take necessary precautions for their safety.
