Cyclone Fengal LIVE Coverage: Chennai Struggles with Waterlogging Amid Tamil Nadu Rains

CHENNAI: Cyclone Fengal, pronounced “Feinjal,” is expected to make landfall this afternoon along the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline, between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone will bring wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 90 kmph.

Chennai, along with Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry, is preparing for heavy rainfall and potential disruptions. The adverse weather has already affected flights to and from Chennai, with delays and cancellations reported.

The IMD stated that the cyclone formed from a deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, which intensified into Cyclonic Storm Fengal on Friday. As of 8:30 AM IST today, the cyclone was located approximately 120 km east-northeast of Puducherry, 110 km southeast of Chennai, 200 km north-northeast of Nagapattinam, and 420 km north of Trincomalee. It is moving west-northwestward at a speed of 13 kmph.

The storm is predicted to continue its westward trajectory and make landfall near Puducherry during the evening hours of November 30th. The IMD warns of strong winds, heavy rains, and potential waterlogging in affected areas. Coastal regions are on high alert, with precautionary measures in place to ensure safety.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency teams are on standby, and local administrations are coordinating efforts to minimize damage and ensure swift response to any crisis caused by the cyclone.
