National Investigation Agency Steps In Amid Rising Violence in Manipur

Imphal, November 27, 2024 – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over three significant cases related to violent incidents in Manipur, including the killing of a woman in Jiribam. These cases, initially filed by local police, were transferred to the NIA on November 13, 2024, as part of its efforts to investigate and address the ongoing unrest. The cases involve the murder of a woman by militants in Jiribam, attacks on security forces in the region, and the destruction of homes and deaths of civilians in Borobekra.

The violence in Manipur has been escalating since May 2023, primarily due to ethnic tensions between different communities. This has led to severe disruptions, including clashes between militants and security forces, resulting in multiple casualties. The situation remains volatile, with continuous violence undermining efforts to restore peace in the state.

On November 11, militants launched an attack on a police station in Borobekra and a CRPF camp, causing heavy casualties. These assaults have intensified the ongoing conflict, further destabilizing the region. The violence has prompted the need for extensive investigations to identify the perpetrators and understand their motives.

In response to the worsening situation, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has urged an increase in security measures. The government has been coordinating with local and national agencies to manage the unrest and ensure the safety of civilians and security forces, with hopes to restore calm in the violence-stricken areas of Manipur.
