Delhi’s Air Quality Hits Critical Levels: Schools, Flights, and Public Life Disrupted

New Delhi, November 27, 2024 – New Delhi continues to grapple with hazardous air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a peak of 494 in various areas. Dense smog has enveloped the city, causing visibility issues and disrupting daily activities. Monitoring stations reported AQI levels nearing 500 in places like Anand Vihar and Alipur, indicating some of the worst pollution levels seen this season.

The worsening air quality has prompted authorities to take emergency measures. Schools and colleges in the Delhi-NCR region have shifted to online classes as a precaution. Transportation systems have been heavily impacted, with over 180 flights delayed and train schedules disrupted due to reduced visibility caused by the smog.

In response to the crisis, the government has activated Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). These measures include a complete halt to construction activities at public sites, a ban on non-essential truck entries into the city, and restrictions on industrial operations to curb emissions.

Health advisories have been issued, urging people, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, to avoid outdoor activities. The Delhi government has also appealed for artificial rainfall to disperse the smog and called for urgent intervention from the central government to address the deteriorating situation.
