AMU Sees Protests for Reservation as Students March for Justice

Aligarh, November 26, 2024 – The Aarakshan Sangharsh Morcha organized a march on Tuesday, demanding reservation for Dalits, backward, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in admissions at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The march, led by a newly-formed student body, took place under tight security on the university campus, with barricades erected on roads leading to the area.

The protesters gathered at Raja Mahendra Pratap Chowk in Civil Lines before marching towards the University Circle at the campus entrance. During the march, some protesters attempted to breach the barricades, resulting in a brief confrontation with authorities.

A memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was handed over to Additional City Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Mishra, who received it on behalf of the District Magistrate. Mishra later stated that the procession was carried out peacefully.

The students’ memorandum called for reservations for Hindu Dalits, backward, and tribal communities in AMU until the Supreme Court delivers a verdict on the matter. AMU officials clarified that the issue of caste-based reservation is under judicial review, and there is no religion- or caste-based reservation at the university until the Supreme Court’s decision.
