Terrorism Main Obstacle to India-Pakistan Relations, Says UN Envoy Ruchira Kamboj

NEW YORK: India’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, reiterated that terrorism remains the primary impediment to fostering better relations with Pakistan. Speaking on the issue, she highlighted India’s decades-long experience as a target of cross-border terrorism, emphasizing the need for robust global cooperation to counter this menace. She stressed that India follows a strict zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and has been actively engaging with international partners to enhance counter-terrorism mechanisms.

Kamboj also addressed the evolving nature of threats, such as cyber terrorism, terror financing, and radicalization. She called on the global community to adopt proactive strategies to mitigate these challenges. Highlighting the significance of collective action, she pointed to India’s consistent efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure justice for victims of terrorism, whether domestically or through international platforms.

In her remarks, the Ambassador reaffirmed India’s stance on nuclear deterrence, maintaining its commitment to credible minimum deterrence and a no-first-use policy. She outlined how India’s defense approach is aligned with preventing any recurrence of large-scale terrorist attacks, referencing incidents such as the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the 9/11 attacks in the United States as cautionary tales.

Kamboj’s statements underscore India’s broader strategy of combining stringent counter-terrorism measures with international advocacy for stronger global frameworks. She conveyed India’s readiness to contribute to multilateral efforts aimed at eliminating terrorism in all its forms, fostering greater regional stability, and building a safer world.
