NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over three cases related to the ongoing violence in Manipur, signaling a shift towards a more centralized investigation into the ongoing unrest in the state. The cases involve serious allegations, including attacks on security forces, targeted violence against civilians, and the use of explosive materials in clashes. These developments come amid rising concerns over the escalating ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the northeastern state, which has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced since May 2023.
The NIA’s intervention aims to expedite the investigation process and bring perpetrators to justice, with the agency taking charge of incidents that have drawn national attention. The cases, initially investigated by local police, involve charges related to terrorism, arson, and illegal activities by insurgent groups, including the use of explosive devices in several attacks. The agency’s involvement is seen as crucial for ensuring a coordinated response to what is now considered a major security challenge for the region.
Authorities have emphasized that the NIA’s expertise will be pivotal in uncovering the larger networks and instigators behind the violence, and ensuring a thorough investigation. The move has been welcomed by many in the state, particularly those who believe that the violence needs to be addressed with a more comprehensive, national security approach. However, the NIA’s expanded role in handling these cases has also sparked debate, with some political leaders in Manipur questioning the central government’s growing influence over state matters.
