TDP Boosts Tourism with Floating Projects in Andhra Pradesh

VISAKHAPATNAM: The TDP-led government has intensified its efforts to promote tourism across the state by introducing innovative projects. Recently, a floating restaurant was inaugurated in Rajamahendravaram, and experimental seaplane services between Vijayawada and Srisailam were initiated. Plans are underway to construct a floating bridge in Visakhapatnam, with a feasibility study already in progress. Rishikonda Beach has been identified as a suitable location for the project, and a team of experts has conducted on-site inspections. The Tourism Department, in collaboration with VMRDA, is exploring ways to bring this project to life.

    Learning from Past Mistakes
The previous YSRCP government had launched a floating bridge at RK Beach in Visakhapatnam in a hurried manner, with no prior feasibility studies, seemingly for electoral gains. However, the bridge was destroyed by strong waves on the very day it was inaugurated. Efforts to repair or relocate the bridge failed due to the area’s deep waters and high wave activity. In contrast, the TDP government is focusing on creating a sustainable and secure floating bridge to attract tourists while ensuring safety measures are in place.

    Enhancing Water Sports at Rishikonda
Rishikonda Beach is already known for its vibrant water sports, including scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, jet skiing, and speed boating, which contribute 25% of AP Tourism Development Corporation’s revenue. Private operators also run boating services in the area. The government is evaluating whether a floating bridge would disrupt these activities and is consulting experts on ways to mitigate any challenges. Relocating the boating operations to a different zone is being considered if necessary.

    Ensuring Safety and Sustainability
Rishikonda Beach has received the prestigious Blue Flag certification, emphasizing the need for stringent safety measures. Any mishap involving the floating bridge could jeopardize this certification. To address these concerns, the government is working closely with national maritime research organizations and engineering teams. Following detailed studies by the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and other research bodies, Rishikonda has been identified as a viable site for the floating bridge, with the possibility of locating it near the current boating area to minimize disruptions.
