Republicans Secure Control of U.S. House and Senate, Poised to Advance Trump’s Agenda

WASHINGTON: Republicans have secured enough seats to control the U.S. House and Senate, completing a party sweep of the government alongside President-elect Donald Trump. The GOP’s victory in Arizona and California gave them the 218 House seats needed for a majority, while they also gained control of the Senate. With this control, Republicans are ready to swiftly implement Trump’s policies, including large-scale deportations, tax breaks, and a reshaped economy. The party now has a mandate for the “America First” agenda, with little opposition from Democrats.

Trump, returning to Washington after the election, rallied House Republicans and endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson, who is preparing an ambitious 100-day agenda. Allies of Trump, such as Rep. Matt Gaetz, are expected to be nominated for key positions, while House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan has hinted at investigations into the special counsel overseeing Trump’s legal matters.

While the Republican majority is thin, some members have already resigned, creating potential challenges for maintaining control. GOP moderates, who won tough elections, could also complicate the passage of extreme proposals. In the Senate, Republican leadership under John Thune is preparing to work with Trump on confirming his Cabinet and judicial picks. However, divisions remain, particularly around controversial figures like Gaetz.

Despite internal party tensions, Republican leaders are united in their support for Trump’s agenda and are ready to capitalize on their victories to push for lasting change.
