BANGALORE: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya recently criticized the Congress-led government in Karnataka, claiming that its policies are driving the state towards bankruptcy. He alleged that various populist measures and subsidies introduced by the Congress party are leading to unsustainable financial pressure on the state budget. Surya particularly highlighted schemes like the “Gruha Lakshmi” program, which provides financial support to women heads of households, and the “Anna Bhagya” scheme, offering free rice to families, as examples of welfare initiatives that, according to him, strain Karnataka’s finances.
Surya argued that these welfare-oriented schemes are aimed more at securing a vote bank than at fostering genuine economic development, which he suggested should be the government’s priority. He warned that such high expenditure on subsidies without adequate revenue generation could lead to a financial crisis, harming the state’s long-term economic stability.
In response, the Congress government has defended its policies, arguing that these social welfare initiatives address essential needs and uplift underprivileged sections of society. They emphasize that such programs improve living conditions and stimulate local economies, positioning them as essential investments rather than financial liabilities.
