Nashik: A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Nashik district for allegedly impersonating an IPS officer and defrauding a businessman of ₹1 crore, police reported on Monday.
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Gaurav Ramachheshwar Mishra, allegedly wore a police uniform, traveled in a vehicle with a beacon, and carried a fake ID card while posing as an inspector general in the Indian Railway Board.
An official said Mishra reportedly gained the businessman’s trust after their initial acquaintance in 2018, promising him a railway contract in exchange for ₹1 crore over various transactions.
“Realising that Mishra had cheated him, the complainant demanded his money back. The accused called him to a hotel on October 13 and threatened him with a revolver,” the official added.
The accused allegedly went further, demanding ₹5 lakh monthly as extortion, threatening to use his purported influence in the police department to file false rape cases against the businessman.
Following a complaint lodged by the businessman on Sunday, police arrested Mishra and charged him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
