    Railways widens search for specialized technical staff

    NEW DELHI: To address specialized technical requirements, the Ministry of Railways has announced that starting next year, it will recruit officers for the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) through both the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), conducted by the UPSC. Between 2022 and 2024, the recruitment process was exclusively through the Civil Services route.

    According to official sources, recruitment will be made for a unified IRMS, which includes sub-cadres aligned with the functional areas of the railways across eight streams: traffic, accounts, personnel, civil, electrical, mechanical, signal & telecommunication, and stores.

    The Ministry revealed that the UPSC has included the Ministry of Railways’ requirements for recruiting engineers through the ESE 2025, with the preliminary examination scheduled to begin on June 8, 2025. The Ministry has requested the recruitment of 225 personnel for five sub-cadres of IRMS, including IRMS (Civil) – 75, IRMS (Mechanical) – 40, IRMS (Electrical) – 50, IRMS (Signal & Telecommunication) – 40, and IRMS (Stores) – 20.

    Additionally, the Ministry placed an indent of 25 officers for recruitment through the CSE-2025, covering three sub-cadres: IRMS (Traffic) – 11, IRMS (Personnel) – 5, and IRMS (Accounts) – 9. The preliminary examination for these posts is scheduled for May 25, 2025. Previously, 150 positions were sought through CSE-2022, of which 132 officers were allotted, with 58 currently undergoing training at the Indian Railway Institute of Traffic Management (IRITM) in Lucknow. Through CSE-2023, 86 officers have been allotted so far, and they are expected to commence institutional training at IRITM from December 2, 2024.
