‘Tamil Nadu Government Did More Than What IAF Requested For Chennai Air Show’ Says CM MK Stalin

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the state government provided more support than requested by the Indian Air Force (IAF) for the air show held on Sunday, October 6, on Marina Beach. In light of the tragedy, where five people died due to heat-related issues, Stalin expressed his deepest condolences to their families and announced a ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased.

The air show, which attracted thousands of spectators, led to five deaths and over 100 hospitalisations caused by the extreme heat. People had gathered hours before the show, which took place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., standing in the scorching sun for 2-3 hours, with some using umbrellas to shield themselves from the heat.

Chief Minister Stalin stressed how much efforts went into the preparation in a statement. “We have done facilities more than what the IAF had requested from us,” he said, adding that the police, fire services, health department, and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had all worked together to coordinate the event. He also noted that the state averted a potential stampede, considering the size of the crowd. “We have averted a stampede,” he stated.

Stalin acknowledged the difficulties faced by attendees, especially in finding their vehicles and accessing public transport after the event, and assured that future events would be better organised to prevent such issues. “Next time, when such huge events are organised, additional attention and facilities will be ensured,” he added.

The Chief Minister expressed his sorrow over the loss of life, stating, “I’m saddened to learn that five people have lost their lives because of heavy heat and other medical reasons. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”

Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that five people had succumbed to heat-related issues. He also stated that nearly 100 individuals were admitted to nearby government hospitals, with seven still undergoing treatment while 93 have been discharged.

The Indian Air Force’s aerial display over Marina Beach was a major attraction, drawing massive crowds despite the harsh weather conditions. However, the unexpected surge in attendance and the intense heat led to unfortunate consequences for many who had come to witness the event.
