Delhi: A doctor was shot dead by two teenagers at Nima Hospital at Jaitpur area in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj, police said on Thursday morning. The deceased has been identified as Javed Akhtar, a Unani practitioner (BUMS) who was on night duty at the hospital. Akhtar was shot dead by two minor boys inside his cabin in the early hours of Thursday.
News agency ANI citing hospital staff reported that two men had arrived at the hospital with an injury. After receiving treatment, the accused men demanded to meet the doctor. Thereafter, they entered the victim’s cabin and fired upon him, leaving him dead.
Soon after the incident, the accused fled the spot, prompting police action. CCTV footage visuals were being examined to identify the accused, said Delhi Police.
Targeted Killing Suspected
As fresh details emerged into the killing it has come to light that it could be a case of targeted killing. The Delhi Police suspect it to be a case of targeted killing as it was unprovoked. Police said the assailants had recced the hospital on Wednesday night.
According to a hospital worker, the shooting incident occurred at around 1 am. He said the doctor was on duty since 8 pm last night.
How the Crime Unfolded
Police said the accused boys were around 16-17 years old who had come to the hospital on the pretext of getting treatment.
They said one of them asked to change the dressing of his injured toe. Notably, his dressing was also done the previous night in the same hospital but by different doctor.
Delhi Police said, “During inquiry it was revealed that two boys, both about 16-17 years of age, came to the Nursing Home at the hospital. One of them asked to change the dressing of his injured toe. Dressing of this boy was also done the previous night in the same hospital.”
Accused Recced Hospital Before Crime
Police said, on Wednesday, one of the accused got his dressing done by Md Kamil and thereafter, went to Javed Akhtar’s cabin for a prescription of medicine. After some time, two staffers at the hospital, Gajala Parveen and Md. Kamil, heard a gunshot and rushed to his cabin only to find him lying in a pool of blood. The doctor was found lying motionless with blood oozing from left side of his head.
“Yesterday after dressing by Md Kamil, both went to the cabin of Javed Akhtar, a Unani practitioner (BUMS) for a prescription of medicine. After some time, night nursing staff Gajala Parveen and Md. Kamil heard a gunshot.”
“Gajala Parveen went towards the cabin of Javed Akhtar and found him in a pool of blood oozing from left side of his head. Prima facie it is a case of targeted killing as it is unprovoked and the assailants had done recce the previous night,” the police further said.
