AI Boom May Double Data Centre Power Use by 2030: IEA Warns

Paris, April 10, 2025 – The International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported that artificial intelligence (AI) growth could more than double global data centre electricity demand by 2030. As AI usage expands across industries, the rising power requirements are raising concerns over grid pressure and environmental impact.

The IEA highlighted that data centres consumed about 460 TWh of electricity in 2022, a number projected to cross 1,000 TWh by 2030 if unchecked. The agency recommends adopting energy-efficient technologies, scaling up renewables, and implementing strong regulations to manage the sector’s growing carbon footprint.
