Bengaluru: In a massive crackdown, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a key accused in a case involving the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) related to the planting of IEDs at multiple locations in Assam .
Girish Barua, alias Gautam Baruah, was nabbed from the outskirts of Bengaluru, where he had been hiding, said the NIA. The case was registered by the NIA in September concerning the placement of explosive devices across Assam by the banned terrorist organization ULFA (I) as part of an armed protest against Independence Day celebrations in India.
“The accused was part of the group of ULFA (I) operatives that had placed IEDs at locations in North Lakhimpur district in Assam at the behest of the top leadership of the outfit,” stated the NIA.
The suspect was arrested and presented before the Special NIA Court in Bengaluru on September 25, where the court granted a transit remand and ordered his production before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati, Assam . Investigations into the case are underway.
