World Sees Lowest Coal Capacity Addition in 20 Years, But Asia Surges Ahead

Zhangjiakou, April 3, 2025 – The world added just 44 gigawatts (GW) of new coal power capacity last year, the lowest in two decades, indicating progress in clean energy efforts. However, China and India continue expanding coal use, with China starting a record number of new plants and India proposing more projects.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts global coal demand will plateau between 2024 and 2027, as declines in developed nations are offset by growth in emerging economies. Experts urge wealthier countries to phase out coal in line with the Paris climate agreement, warning against technologies that may hinder carbon reduction.
