Geneva, March 26, 2025 — Human rights activist Fazal ur Rehman Afridi has warned that rising Islamic extremism in Bangladesh threatens the country’s pluralistic society. Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council, he criticized the interim government for failing to address increasing repression, extrajudicial killings, and persecution of religious minorities.
Afridi also highlighted attacks on opposition activists and press freedom, with journalists facing harassment for reporting on these issues. He warned that unchecked extremism is eroding democratic values and endangering minority rights in Bangladesh.
