WHO’s Saima Wazed Highlights TB Progress, Urges More Investment

New Delhi, March 24, 2025 – On World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Saima Wazed acknowledged the region’s progress in TB control but emphasized the need for continued action. In 2023, over 3.8 million new and relapse cases were reported, with a treatment success rate of 89%. The number of missed TB cases also declined, and preventive treatment reached nearly 1.5 million people.

Wazed highlighted the financial burden on TB-affected families, with up to 80% facing catastrophic costs. She urged stronger commitments and investments to eliminate TB, as WHO reaffirmed support under the theme: “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.”
