Mumbai, February 24, 2025: Vicky Kaushal’s historical film Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, is performing well at the box office but has faced controversy over its portrayal of historical figures. Descendants of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke objected to certain depictions in the film, claiming misrepresentation of their ancestors. In response, Utekar has issued an apology to the Shirke family.
The Shirke family had threatened legal action, including a ₹100 crore defamation suit, if necessary corrections were not made. Following the notice, Utekar personally reached out to them, clarifying that he had no intention of misrepresenting their lineage. He assured that the film does not explicitly mention their ancestral origins and expressed sincere regret for any discomfort caused.
