Taipei, February 20, 2025 – Taiwan’s Ministry of Education has banned academic exchanges with China’s Huaqiao University and Jinan University due to their ties with Beijing’s United Front Work Department. Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao stated that Taiwanese institutions can no longer collaborate with these universities, which enroll over 2,000 Taiwanese students, to prevent potential political influence and safeguard national security.
The ban covers all educational levels, including public and private institutions, with violators facing the risk of losing government subsidies. While students are free to study at these universities, the ministry has urged caution regarding institutions linked to foreign political agendas.
