Berhampur, February 19, 2025: Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) has collaborated with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) department to establish Odisha’s first desalination plant in Aryapalli and Matikhal villages. The ₹4.2 crore project aims to convert seawater into fresh drinking water, addressing concerns over high salinity in supply water and improving access to potable water for residents.
Using advanced desalination technology from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the plant will generate 1.5 million liters of fresh water daily. The agreement was signed at the Ganjam District Collector’s office, and the facility is expected to be operational within a year, benefiting nearly 2,000 families. This initiative could serve as a model for tackling water scarcity in Odisha’s coastal areas.
