San Francisco, February 19, 2025: Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has founded a new AI startup, Thinking Machines Lab, in San Francisco. The company focuses on developing AI systems that are more accessible and aligned with human values. Murati has recruited a team of around 30 top researchers and engineers, many of whom previously worked at OpenAI, including John Schulman as Chief Scientist and Barret Zoph as CTO.
Thinking Machines Lab aims to foster transparency and collaboration in AI research by publishing studies and sharing code. Murati’s decision to start this venture follows her departure from OpenAI in September 2024, after serving as interim CEO. The startup seeks to push AI innovation beyond current capabilities while maintaining ethical and human-centered development.
