Canada Tightens Language Proficiency Rules for PGWP: IELTS Scores Now a Must

Ottawa, February 17, 2025 — Canada has updated its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) policy, now requiring students to score at least 6 bands in all sections of the IELTS exam or a 7-band in the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) to qualify. This change has sparked concerns, particularly among students facing financial hardships, as many believed completing their course would be enough proof of English proficiency.

Students who fail to meet the new language requirements will be forced to leave Canada. Those with extended study permits have 180 days to apply for the PGWP, but if their permit expires, they must apply within 90 days and restore their student status. This policy shift has left students worried about their eligibility, especially if they didn’t prioritize improving their language skills during their studies.
