Smart Farming: Andhra Farmer Boosts Profits by Shipping Tomatoes to Andaman

Annamayya, February 3, 2025 – In response to declining tomato prices, a farmer from Mulakalacheruvu in Annamayya district, Muneer Basha, has successfully increased profits by exporting tomatoes to the Andaman Islands. Facing losses after investing ₹20 lakh on 10 acres, he decided to ship 500 boxes of tomatoes via the Chennai port, ensuring better market prices.

His exports take about a week to reach Andaman, where traders prefer his fresh, high-quality produce. Unlike the local market, where farmers bear labor and transport costs, Andaman traders cover these expenses. While local prices stand at ₹200 per 25 kg box, Andaman buyers pay ₹450 per box, making it a profitable venture. Muneer Basha now exports 50,000 boxes annually, proving that market diversification can help farmers maximize earnings.
