Sindh’s Water War: JSMM Announces Economic Blockade Against Punjab

Karachi, February 3, 2025 – The Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) has announced political resistance against Punjab’s alleged water diversion from the Indus River, vowing an economic blockade in protest. Sindhi nationalist groups accuse Punjab of depriving Sindh of its rightful water share, worsening agriculture and fishing crises. Protests have intensified following reports of new canal projects in Punjab, which could further reduce Sindh’s water supply.

Sindhi leaders claim the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) unfairly favors Punjab, enabling it to secure more water than its allocated share. With worsening shortages in Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin, the JSMM’s movement is gaining momentum, framing Punjab’s actions as resource exploitation. As tensions rise, the economic blockade threatens to escalate regional disputes over water rights.
