ICAI Proposes Joint Tax Filing for Married Couples in Budget 2025

New Delhi, January 28, 2025: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has recommended introducing joint tax filing for married couples in the upcoming Union Budget 2025. Highlighting the potential benefits of such a move, ICAI stated that joint filing could simplify tax compliance, promote equitable financial planning, and align India’s tax system with global practices followed in countries like the United States and Canada.

The proposal aims to reduce the tax burden on working couples by allowing income aggregation and offering joint deductions. ICAI emphasized that this measure could incentivize dual-income households, improve tax compliance, and support the government’s vision of increasing financial inclusion. The institute also urged the Centre to provide clarity on the procedural framework for implementing this system if approved.
