Andhra Pradesh to Launch 1000 MW Battery Storage Projects to Boost Electricity Supply

Amaravati, January 27, 2025: Andhra Pradesh will soon introduce battery storage projects in the electricity sector, complementing existing solar, wind, and pumped storage power sources. The central government has approved the establishment of these projects with a total storage capacity of 1000 MW across four locations in the state. This initiative, supported by the viability gap funding, will help reduce the cost of electricity for the state. Tenders will be issued soon, with agreements to follow.

The projects will store electricity for consumption during peak demand periods, such as mornings and evenings, reducing the need for expensive power purchases. Currently, DISCOMs buy power at ₹10 per unit, but with the battery storage projects, the cost will drop to ₹5.30 per unit. The projects will be set up in Kuppam, Godavari districts, Jammalamadugu, and Kurnool, addressing issues like low voltage and ensuring a stable power supply.
