Chennai: Amid ongoing concern over work pressure in the corporate world, a software engineer in Thazhambur, Tamil Nadu electrocuted himself as he was reportedly depressed due to the work pressure. The deceased, 38-year-old Karthikeyan, was alone at his house on Thursday night. When his wife returned home from the temple, she found him lying unconscious with wires wrapped around him, the police said.
The victim was a native of Thenu and had been working at a software firm in Pallavaram for the past 15 years. He lived with his wife, K Jayarani, and their two children, aged 10 and 8 years, reported Times of India. The cops said the victim was undergoing treatment for depression at a hospital in Medavakkam for the past two months. he was stressed due to work, the report added.
Jayarani had gone to Thirunallaru temple with her friends on Monday and the children with her mother. Karthikeyan was alone at home, the report added. When she came back in the night, she saw that the door was locked from inside.
When no one opened the door after repeated knocks, she used the spare key only to find her husband lying unconscious.
According to the report, Kathikeyan was wearing undergarments and had his entire body wrapped with a power cable, connected to a main junction box in the hall. She panicked and alerted the neighbours, who then called the Thazhambur police.
Police meanwhile sent the body for post-mortem to Chromepet government hospital. A case of unnatural death has been registered and police are probing if there are other reasons behind his extreme step.

The case comes days after a woman’s letter about her daughter’s death due to work pressure took the internet by storm igniting the work-life balance debate. She said that her daughter Anna Sebastian was heavily depressed due to the work pressure at Ernest & Young (EY)in July this year.
She said her daughter would get calls on Sundays, and would sleep late in the night and wake up early with more work and meetings.
