New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a draft proposing new qualifications for the appointment and promotion of teachers and academic staff in universities and colleges. Notably, the draft suggests removing the National Eligibility Test (NET) as a mandatory requirement for assistant professor appointments. Instead, candidates with a postgraduate degree in ME or MTech and at least 55 percent marks would be eligible for the entry-level assistant professor post. Stakeholders have been invited to provide feedback on the draft by February 5, 2025.
Additionally, the UGC’s draft outlines other eligibility criteria for assistant professors, including candidates with an undergraduate degree (NCrF Level 6) with at least 75 percent marks or a postgraduate degree (NCrF Level 6.5) with a minimum of 55 percent marks, along with a PhD (NCrF Level 8). Candidates can also qualify with a postgraduate degree (NCrF Level 6.5) and NET qualification from UGC, CSIR, ICAR, or a similar test like SLET/SET.
