Apple’s iPhone 16 Launch Delayed in Indonesia Despite Investment Agreement

Jakarta, January 8, 2025: Apple remains prohibited from selling the iPhone 16 in Indonesia despite reaching an investment agreement with the Indonesian government. The deal, aimed at fostering local manufacturing and creating jobs, was expected to pave the way for Apple to launch the new iPhone model in the country. However, Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G. Plate stated that the ban on the iPhone 16 will remain in effect until Apple meets certain local content requirements.

The Indonesian government has set stringent rules for foreign companies, including tech giants like Apple, mandating that they manufacture a minimum percentage of their products locally in exchange for the ability to sell and distribute their devices in the country. While Apple has committed to investing in local production, it has yet to comply with the necessary regulations, which has led to the ongoing restriction on the iPhone 16’s release in Indonesia. The situation has sparked discussions about the balance between encouraging foreign investment and protecting domestic industries.
