3,585 Quintals of Smuggled Rice Seized in Andhra Pradesh Raids

Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, December 4, 2024: Authorities in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district have intensified their crackdown on the illegal smuggling of rice meant for the Public Distribution System (PDS). Recent enforcement operations have led to the seizure of approximately 3,585 quintals (358,500 kilograms) of rice illegally stored or transported across various locations within the district. These measures aim to prevent the diversion of subsidized rice intended for economically disadvantaged beneficiaries to unauthorized markets.

Officials from the Civil Supplies Department, working in coordination with vigilance teams, have conducted a series of raids on warehouses suspected of storing smuggled rice. Vehicle checks have also been increased at strategic points to intercept the transportation of diverted grain. These actions underline the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the PDS and ensuring that essential commodities reach eligible beneficiaries without pilferage.

According to district authorities, organized networks are allegedly behind the smuggling operations, purchasing PDS rice at lower prices from ration cardholders and diverting it for sale in black markets or for export. The government has vowed to dismantle these networks by enhancing surveillance and introducing stricter penalties for offenders. Steps are also being taken to strengthen the accountability of officials involved in PDS operations to prevent collusion and corruption.

The Prakasam district administration has reiterated its resolve to uphold the rights of beneficiaries and protect public resources. Regular review meetings and inter-departmental coordination are being implemented to monitor the distribution of essential goods, ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process.
